It has been ten years since their last Monday Night Football game and with the noisy crowd in Ford Field, Matthew Stafford and the once laughable Lions came out on top. With the help of two touchdown passes from Stafford and Jahvid Best's 88-yard dash to the endzone Detroit was able to unseat the defending National Football Conference (NFC) North rivals, The Chicago Bears, 24-13. The Bears offensive line looked shaky and freaked out by the noisy Lions fans failing to protect Jay Cutler, their Quarterback, and were tagged for nine false start penalties.
Stafford's main and favorite target to through to, Calvin Johnson, caught a 73-yard touchdown pass during the second quarter of Mondays primtime game of the week. Johnson's touchdown catch was the ninth one he has caught this season while becoming the first player in NFL history to catch two touchdown passes in four straight gaames to start a season. Best's 88-yard run was the second best run for the Lions franchise. Even though the score was 24-13, it was the bears who beat themselves not the lions. The Bears were unable to do anything right, they had more false start penalties in the first half at six then anyone made for a whole game this season.
The Bears let Cutler get sacked three times, didn't give him much time to look for a receiver to throw to and let the Lions defensive front seven harass him almost the entire game. "I threw a couple left-handed, one over my head and at least one underhanded. When you have to do those kind of things, you aren't going to be successful," Cutler said. "We started with a regular count, but the guys couldn't hear me, so we had to go to a silent count. It was a lot of things."
It also didn't help that by the end of hte first quarter the Bears already wasted two of their three first-half timeouts on short yardage plays that they shouldn't have used especially in front of a large and loud crowd in a rival game in Detroit. One of their wasted timeouts in the first quartercame on a play they challenged but should not have challenged. It was fourth down with one yeard to go for the first down and the Bears runningback, Matt Forte, was clearly stopped. He was stopped short by the 2010 League Dfensive Rookie of the Year, Ndamukong Suh. Overall, It was a horrible game for the Bears and gave the city of Detroit to rejoice and celebrate.
Detroit's perfection is still intact until at least their next game next sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. This amazing start to the season and the way they ended their season last year with four straight wins to end the year is giving the city of Detroit hope that it won't have to endure being the NFL's laughing stock much longer. It is making their future look bright with all the players they have on their roster who are starting to play like All-Pro's at their postitions, especially with the likes of Calvin Johnson, Matthew Stafford and the Rookie of the Year from last year Ndamukong Suh. All these young players who have only started playing for Detroit in the last few years are showing that they belong in the NFL. All three of the players mentioned, Suh, Stafford and Johnson, were recently extremely high 1st-round draft picks when the were drafted. All three were in the top-5 spots among the first five chosen in their respective drafts. They are just now this year showing that they worth the picks, especially Suh, with the way Suh has been playing since his first professional game.
